Matt Haimovitz, cello – Naples, Italy – PRIMAVERA through the centuries

March 18, 2023 @ 7:30 pm 9:30 pm

THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT, a collaboration between cellist Matt Haimovitz, artist Charline von Heyl, and director Jeffrianne Young, is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional palettes.

Each composer has been asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020. Multi GRAMMY-nominated cellist Matt Haimovitz curates a mobile program from THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT for the exhibition Zweigstelle Capitain III – Napoli. Haimovitz serenades the audience through the intimate rooms of the 19th century architecture of Palazzo Degas.

The composers Missy Mazzoli and Lisa Bielawa offer a musical fantasy on 15th century composer Josquin des Prez. Preludes of Bach weave through the more contemporary commissions by Philip Glass, Tomeka Reid, Vijay Iyer, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Juri Seo and a world premiere of Nina C. Young’s Pentimento.
