Matt Haimovitz has recorded his fourth spring of six to come. He, artist Charline von Heyl and director Jeffrianne Young inspired a total of 81 compositions for this project. All deal in one way or another with aspects of two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera, created circa 1480, and Charline von Heyl’s 2020 triptych Primavera. Here we have a set of 13.
Views resulting from the reflections as well as from derived themes were processed and also in the use of the playing techniques new techniques are found, so that each composition chooses a completely different approach. It is hardly surprising that links to composers such as Bach or Prokofiev or to folk music appear. That also the personal experiences and environments of the composers have their influence on the respective piece is not astonishing either, so that from African to Arctic elements the music goes through hot and cold. This results in a wide spectrum, where every listener can perceive his favorites and also those pieces that bring him less new. But all works show appealing components, so that it never comes to fatigue or even rejection when listening.
Matt Haimovitz is an accomplished artist, attentive even to new music, who knows how to reveal the fibers of the works with his cello playing, which is always sensitive and focused on the particular composition, while at the same time presenting the narratives in an exciting way in the overall view. Technically prepared for any challenge, he thus succeeds in all cases beyond a mere presentation in a convincing interpretation to be heard, so that all works develop a charm. In this way he is able to give and give colors and moods to all 13 reflections and thus prepare the way for them. Thus, this collection of impressions between four and ten minutes in duration offers a rich bouquet of spring flowers, elegantly arranged and lifting positive moods.
